Marlboro Township 9/11 Memorial Paver Project
Full Description:
Marlboro Township 9/11 Memorial Paver Project
The attack that took place on September 11th, 2001 was not just an attack on the United States, but an attack directed against it’s very citizens. The official count of those killed on 9/11/01 is 2,976 people It was on that day that the Township of Marlboro lost fourteen of it’s residents. In memory of those lost on that day, the Township of Marlboro, dedicated this memorial in their memory. Recently the Township of Marlboro was able to secure a 12 foot steel "I" beam recovered from the World Trade Center to have installed at the Memorial.
Mounting the WTC steel
Mounting a 12 foot long "I" beam vertically is no easy or inexpensive task. The foundation or base required to support the weight of the steel, will have to be several feet deep and several feet wide. In order to pre-pare the ground and ensure the steel will remain safely in place for many many years to come, the base needs to be quite extensive. Additionally the Memorial itself will be expanded, with the addition of three flagpoles. One to fly the American Flag, the State Flag of New Jersey and one to fly a 9/11 Memorial Flag. The base of the New Memorial will be in the shape of a pentagon. Each side will display the names of the fourteen Marlboro residents lost that day, in addition to the time of impact of each plane and the total number of lives lost. There will also be an expanded paver patio that will act as the visitors area, in addition to new lighting. All of this will cost approximately $53,000.00 to build and even more to maintain. 100% of this money will come from fund raising events to be held in and around Marlboro Township. The goal is to have the Memorial re-dedicated on 9/11/2011, ten years to the day of the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and crash of all four flights.
